Now that you're prepped and ready, let's get those lights up! Follow these steps to ensure a smooth, safe installation.
1. Unpack and Inspect All Components
Start by laying out all your LED fixtures, cables, and mounting hardware on a clean, dry surface (a tarp works well). Check each light for cracks, loose parts, or damaged cords—even brand-new fixtures can have defects. Test the lights briefly by plugging them into a power source (use the extension cord and GFCI outlet) to ensure they turn on and dim properly (if applicable). If any light flickers or fails to light, set it aside for replacement later.
2. Plan Your Light Placement
The goal here is even lighting with no dark spots or harsh glare. For a standard inflatable soccer football court (about 30x50 feet), 4–6 LED fixtures should suffice. Here's a tried-and-true layout:
-
Corner mounting:
Place 2–3 lights on each long side of the field, angled downward at 45 degrees to cover the center. This avoids shadows near the goals.
-
Goalpost lights:
Add 1–2 small LED floodlights near each goal to highlight the net—this makes it easier to spot goals and keeps players from tripping over the base of the goal.
-
Height matters:
Mount lights at least 6 feet above the playing surface (higher if the field has walls). This reduces glare and ensures the light spreads evenly across the field.
Use a pencil or removable marker to lightly mark the mounting spots on the inflatable surface. Double-check that these spots are away from seams, valves, and any logos or designs that might be damaged by adhesive.
3. Clean and Prep Mounting Areas
Dirt, dust, or moisture on the inflatable surface will prevent adhesive hooks from sticking. Take your soft cloth and mild detergent (diluted with water) to wipe down each marked mounting spot. Let the area dry completely—this usually takes 10–15 minutes. For extra adhesion, you can gently rub the area with a dry cloth to remove any remaining residue.
4. Mount the LED Fixtures
Now it's time to attach the lights! For most inflatable surfaces, adhesive hooks or Velcro straps are the safest options—they hold securely but won't puncture the material. Here's how to do it:
-
Peel the backing off the adhesive hook and press it firmly onto the marked spot. Hold it in place for 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond—don't rush this step!
-
Once the hook is secure, attach the LED fixture using the mounting bracket (most fixtures come with a clip or loop that fits over the hook). If using Velcro, wrap the straps around the fixture and the inflatable wall, pulling tight but not so hard that the material wrinkles.
-
Repeat for all fixtures, stepping back occasionally to check that they're level and angled correctly. Adjust as needed—better to fix a misalignment now than after wiring!
Pro Tip:
If your
inflatable football arena has a mesh netting (common around the perimeter), you can thread zip ties through the net to mount lights—just make sure the ties are loose enough to allow the net to flex without snapping.
5. Run and Secure Cables
No one wants to trip over loose cables mid-game! Here's how to keep wires neat and safe:
-
Route cables along seams:
The seams of the inflatable structure are slightly raised, which helps hide and protect cables. Use UV-resistant cable ties to attach cables to the seams, leaving 1–2 inches of slack to account for the inflatable's movement.
-
Avoid sharp bends:
LED cables are durable, but sharp kinks can damage the wires inside. Use gentle curves when routing cables around corners.
-
Connect fixtures in series:
If your lights have daisy-chain ports, connect them one after another to reduce the number of cables running to the power source. Just make sure not to exceed the maximum wattage of your power supply—check the manufacturer's instructions for limits.
-
Seal connections:
Use waterproof electrical connectors to join cables. Twist the wires together first, then screw on the connector and tighten the rubber gasket until it's snug. This prevents water from seeping in and causing shorts.
6. Test the System
You're almost there! Before declaring victory, test the entire system to make sure everything works:
-
Plug the main cable into the GFCI outlet or generator. Turn on the power slowly—some LED systems have a soft start feature that prevents voltage spikes.
-
Walk around the field and check each light. Are they all turning on? Is the light even, or are there dark spots? Adjust the angle of any fixtures that are casting shadows.
-
Test dimming or color-changing features (if your system has them). For example, if you're hosting a night tournament, dimming the lights slightly during halftime can create a fun, festive vibe—perfect for integrating with inflatable lighting decoration like string lights or colored spotlights.
-
Check for flickering or buzzing. Flickering usually means a loose connection—tighten the electrical connectors or re-seat the bulb. Buzzing might indicate a faulty driver, which will need replacement.
